Saturday 27th September saw the last DTAA competition of the year and most anglers favourite, the McCarron Cup.
In a repeat of his victory last year, Dermot Flynn has scooped the top prize with a stunning victory last Saturday on Owel. In addition, he weighed in the heaviest fish!
Conditions were perfect for fishing and 22 anglers set out with hopes high. Lots of small fish were caught with most anglers seeing some action.
It was Dermot Flynn, however, that did it again with a lovely fish of 4.56 lbs caught in the first 20 mins. That also confers the honour of heaviest fish of the season to Dermot. He then had a nice 2.5 lb fish just before lunch.
Tom Hipwell was 2nd and Chris meadows was 3rd.

Great craic was had at lunch time with a prearranged meeting of most of the boats at 1:30 in the graveyard. This is something we’ll definitely do again!
Great excitement also in Chris and PJ boat with PJ hooking and landing a 20lb pike on 6lb leader !!
And what a year for our secretary Cathal McDonnell who cemented angler of the year and also fished his first Irish Cap in lakes Menteith recently. Congratulations Cathal!

The meal was held as usual in the Greville Arms where we well looked after. The prize giving went well with lots of great prizes handed out. Thanks to Dave McBride of Southside Angling for subsidising the prizes as usual.
Also a huge thanks to Kilbride angler and Brendan Murray for the use of their boats on the day and all year.

DTAA angler Mark McAllister was fishing on Mask last week and had a red letter day fishing the deeps. Fishing the Deeps (4.45-7.30pm) at a secret location, Mark had seven in the net, five keepers, and he lost two more. The Soldier Palmer accounted for 3, #10 Peter Ross had 2 , #12 colourful squirrel tail Mayfly and his Daphne wet fly took one fish each. It was a remarkable few hours, all blind fishing in 20m plus depth. Thanks to Mark for the report and for sharing the images below:
The 2025 Ryder cup took place as usual at Bohernabreena Reservoir last Saturday. Conditions were nice, with a southerly wind making casting tricky on the car park side of the lower reservoir, but quite comfortable at other locations. As it happened the winning fish was caught by Cathal McDonnell at this location, a modest rainbow of just over 1.5 Lbs, which beat Fran Nugent’s bag of three wild brownies. Just nine anglers turned out on the day, of which five weighed in fish. Cathal was well ahead of Dave Canning in second place with his fish of 1.525 Lbs to Dave’s two fish totalling 1.09 Lbs, and then Fran in third place with, as mentioned above, three fish for 1.075 Lbs.
Anglers were evenly split between the car park (western) shore of the lower reservoir and the far side, with Fran and Dave set up at the mouth of the river to the south. This proved productive with free rising wild brownies resulting in two each for those anglers. Having bagged up on the lower lake, they headed to the upper lake where Fran got his third fish.

Thanks as usual to Tom and the team for organising the competition. We are looking forward to the next and final outing of the Season on the 27th at Lough Owel followed by dinner afterwards in the Greville Arms. This is typically one of the most popular DTAA competitions of the year so be sure to notify Tom if you are able to make it.
DTAA members and friends enjoyed a day out last Sunday 24th August at Laois Angling Centre.
14 youngsters turned out on the day with most either catching or hooking a fish, using fly fishing as well as bait fishing techniques.
The team at Laois Angling had recently stocked the lakes and so there were fish showing here and there, with both fly and bait equally successful.
Thanks to Laois Angling for hosting us and making every effort to ensure that our participants had a chance of a fish. Being the last weekend before school starts meant that it was quite busy which was great to see, so much interest in angling, with several family groups present, and people of all ages taking part and enjoying this excellent pastime.

11 DTAA anglers took part in the ITFFA Leinster Qualifiers on Lough Lene yesterday Saturday 16th August. 5 members made the cut and are through to the National Final to take palce next year on Lough Conn, a lake that many DTAA members will be very familiar with and for which they hold great affection.
Gerry Heaslip had an outstanding day with 3 fish, earning him top spot and trophy, presented below by Brendan Murray.
The other DTAA qualified anglers are Declan McKibben, Fran Nugent, Brian Conway, and Alan Doherty:
Conditions were great: it turned out to be not as sunny as forecasted, and there was a light to moderate wind which produced a nice wave, meaning that many anglers switched to wetfly methods as the competition progressed (thanks to Mark McAllister for sharing these pictures below)
Despite the good conditions, however, fish were hard got and only 23 anglers caught fish that measured. This was similar to how many anglers reported their fishing on Lene in the previous week, with Friday being flat calm and nothing working, and Wednesday being a little better with the off fish being seen and hooked.
Thanks to Brendan, Denis, Martin and all the ITTFA Leinster team for organising the qualifier, and looking forward to the final next year on Conn.
A quick report on the Elvery Cup that took place yesterday Saturday 26th July on Lough Lene.
26 anglers took part with Hubert Smith in first place with a fish of just over 3 lbs; Cathal McDonnell came second and Tom Hipwell in third place.

in terms of the overall leaderboard for the season, Cathal McDonnell has a strong lead with 5 competitions done and only 2 remaining. Cathal has 31 points to PJ’s 24.
Next competition will be the Ryder Cup at Bohernabreena.
The Ian Rowand competition took place today in ideal conditions on Lough Owel. There was a moderate West/Northwest wind and the rain held off. There was no fly life to be seen but the swallows dipped and dived around the lake so perhaps there was something up.
11 of the 22 competing anglers weighed in 19 fish which was a fair return. Donal Monahan took the top position with his 2 fine fish weighing in at 6.895 lbs and one of those was the heaviest fish for the day at 3.66 Lbs.
PJ O’Driscoll came in 2nd place with his bag of 4.950 Lbs and Cathal McDonnell in 3rd with 4.455 Lbs.
The special weight prize went to Jim Keeshan.

Donal Raftery takes the top spot for this year’s LM Byrne Cup on Lene amid very challenging conditions with heavy downpours most of the day and finishing off with some sunshine This is Donal’s first ever DTAA competition win though he’s been there or thereabouts many times over the years.
Gary Coakley came second with Hubert Smith taking third spot. Paul Delaney won the special weight prize… twice in a row!

DTAA members Declan McKibben and John O’Neill (also capped for Ireland) placed 4th and 5th after two hard days fishing last weekend on Conn. The annual Whit Weekend competition has been going now for many years thanks to the hard work of Orla Walsh and Padraig Traynor, and volunteers from the local club.
Conditions were not great it must be said. A stiff southwesterly wind made fishing uncomfortable for some on the Saturday, with the majority of anglers staying on the West of the lake from Castlehill Bay, Gallaghers, Abbey Shore, Flannery’s, Ned’s and Bog Bay. Some braved the crossing to other side near the narrowest point from Chain Island to Rinmore, fishing down that Eastern shore into Sandy Bay… all the while knowing that the return trip would be lumpy enough. Other adventurous types went even further up the lake to Brackwansha and Cormorant Rocks, where perhaps the best of the fishing was to be had. Sunday was a similarly challenging day, with the wind similar to Saturday (25-30km) but coming more Westerly and even Northwesterly at times.
Despite some amount of Mayfly still hanging around all over the lake, the fish were hard got, not much surface action and pulling wets on an intermediate or slow sinker proved the most effective method. Yellow and Green mayflies were effective, though the trout were thought also to have been feeding on fry.
Overall there were 86 anglers out with just 10 returning fish on Saturday (for a total of 12 fish which measured at least 13″) while on the Sunday there were 11 anglers returning just 15 fish (this is similar to last year’s competition). Despite the poor fishing, all it takes is for a few to be caught to determine the winners and runners up. As usual the prize for the Whit Weekend is a Sheelin Boat. Local angler Stephen Browne blanked on Saturday but brought in a nice bag of 3 fish for almost 4 lbs on Sunday, losing a nice fish estimated to be 3 lbs during his day at Cormorant Rocks. This earned Stephen the Tolan/Traynor Cup for the second year in a row and another boat! Clare angler Jimmy Fitzgerald (heat winner on Saturday) came in second, winning a nice Sage rod and Northern Irish angler William Craig placing 3rd. Lough Arrow expert angler Francie White had the heaviest fish (approx 2.50 lbs) on Sunday which was enough to get him well up in the prizes.
Stephen receiving the Tolan/Traynor Cup.Stephen wins the boat…. again!
DTAA’s Declan McKibben and boat partner Joe Ferguson headed for Rinmore Point on Saturday, fishing along the shore and into Sandy Bay where Declan picked up a nice fish of 0.775kg. Declan fished with Corrib based Leitrim angler Gene Haran on Sunday, heading straight for Castlehill Bay where conditions were quite good for dries and wets despite the occasional banks of weed lurking just below the surface. Declan picked up another trout in the first drift, and rose two more later in the day, while Gene saw and covered at least two fish. This made it hard to leave Castlehill Bay where it generally accepted that a quality fish is possible anywhere in this shallow bay.
John O’Neill fished with John Walsh on Saturday and Francie McSharry on Sunday. They fished Flannery’s, Gallagher’s, the Bog, 5 pin shallows, and the Abbey shore. John got his first fish at Woodford shallows and the 2nd at the 3 pins Gortnor Abbey side of Woodford, with both fish on day one, and earning him second place in the heat.

As noted above, this long running competition would not be possible without the dedication and hard work of Orla and Padraig and volunteers. In addition, high praise is due to the Boatmen who boat their partners around the lake, ensuring that a great day is had by all.
